May is mental health awareness month and my thoughts sway to Sunflower. I think about her unresolved trauma and how it affects her mental health. Her challenges began with conception and for many like her these challenges have stacked like dominoes. What maybe real for Sunflower is trauma and challenges, while alone in this life are her very unhealthy normal.
In a few months she will age out of foster care at age 18. She will become homeless and has never been the choice for a family of her own. Her life is the trash bag she has with all her belongings.
Sunflower did not make the decision that has controlled her life and has contributed to her broken mental state. Can you try to understand her plight and give her something to help ease her pain. Broken though she maybe her mental state doesn’t have to be permanent.
